Patient 31 (2011/02/06 19:16:35): is it true, that the polishing component of a regualr Scale and polish results in enamel wear. Although the wear is minimal, it is approximately equivalent to about 3 years of professional toothbrushing? As l had no deep stains, I decided to get only a scale, after my dentist informed me of this.

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:17:01): This is Dr Amrata srivastava.

Patient 31 (2011/02/06 19:17:43): my name is nixon, if u can letme knw thx

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:19:22): If you dont have any deep stains and large amount of tartar the regular scaling after about 6 months or 1 yr would be enough for your case.

Patient 31 (2011/02/06 19:20:07): can we write and get a response free of charge?

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:20:59): we usually give detailed answer in paid version compared to free chat.

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:21:36): do you want to continue as free chat ?

Patient 31 (2011/02/06 19:23:05): my question is straightforward, so polish does wear down enamel right?

Patient 31 (2011/02/06 19:23:35): is the wear equivalent to about 3 years of normal brushing?

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:25:26): yes, There is enamel wear due to polishing but the wear is practically minimal as we go for professional polishing only for once or twice an year . There is no such research conducted upon such comparison.

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:26:42): hence I as professional dentist would refrain to make any comments upon such comparisons. The polishing instead helps in less of further staining. excessive or repeated polishing is harmful.

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:27:37): because there are scratches that form after scaling and polishing is done to smoothen those scratches

Patient 31 (2011/02/06 19:27:39): would you say its equivalent to about 3 years of toothbrushing? as my dentist said today? he put me off having my teeth polished

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:28:50): hence less stains deposit afte scaling. Tooth enamel wears more with toothpastes with polishing agents or whitening agents.

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:29:10): causing thinning of enamel

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:29:58): NO, there is no such available comparison because it depends upon lots of factors like duration of polishing, polishing agent smpoothness etc.

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:30:11): and technique and equipment speed

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:30:40): smoothness or abrasiveness I meant

Patient 31 (2011/02/06 19:31:28): my incisors do have a slight abrasion , 2 small spots where enamel are thinner, and there are superficial stains, on them, partly reduced by scaling, but dentist advised against polishing my teeth

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:32:28): then why dont you go for minimally invasive air polishing technique which can reduce such stains

Visitor 31 is typing...

Doctor (2011/02/06 19:33:40): In this technique the tooth material is very very minmally reduce because there is not hard abrasives used … It is called ART technique. or microabrasion
